There are many different eye conditions that we should be aware of, especially as we age. One of those is macular degeneration. Many of our patients have questions about this age-related eye disease. That’s why our team at Kunesh Eye Center in Dayton has put together a list of answers to some of these questions.

What Is Macular Degeneration?

This eye condition is often referred to as age-related macular degeneration, commonly called AMD. It occurs with the slow deterioration of the central part of the retina called the macula.

How Does Macular Degeneration Affect Me?

One of the biggest problems with macular degeneration is there are virtually no early warning signs in the early stages of the condition. Common symptoms include wavelike lines or blank spots in the center of your vision as it progresses. If left untreated, your central vision will diminish significantly over time.

Who Is at Risk of Macular Degeneration?

Aging is the biggest risk factor for AMD, affecting most people who are older than 60. While there isn’t an exact cause, research proves that smoking, poor lifestyle habits, and a family history of the disease also increase your chances of macular degeneration.

How Is Macular Degeneration Diagnosed and Treated?

Only a comprehensive eye exam can diagnose macular degeneration. Our ophthalmologists can spot even minor alterations in the eyes’ blood vessels that could be a warning sign of the disease. Depending on the severity of your condition, it can be controlled with diet changes or medication. More advanced cases typically require eye surgery. Again, early treatment is an essential way to prevent further vision loss.
